What planners usually like:

- Request detailed technical specifications including lighting, sound systems, projection capabilities, and backstage facilities
- Ask about load-in/load-out procedures, setup time allowances, and whether staff assistance is included or requires additional fees
- Verify rental terms including performance duration limits, rehearsal access, exclusive use policies, and cancellation terms
Common questions
What's the typical seating capacity, and is it suitable for intimate productions versus larger theater works?
The venue's capacity isn't publicly listed, so you'll need to contact them directly at +86 21 6279 7132 to confirm. Since it's an established opera house in Shanghai's cultural district, it likely accommodates mid-to-large scale productions, but specifics on configuration options (balcony levels, flexible seating) require direct conversation with their team.
What technical capabilities should I expect for a theatrical production or opera performance?
As a dedicated opera house, the venue should have standard theatrical infrastructure (stage lighting, sound systems, curtain systems), but you'll want to request a detailed technical rider. Ask specifically about pit access if needed for orchestral accompaniment, projection capabilities, and whether technical staff support is provided or available for hire.
How accessible is the venue for cast, crew, and audience members, and what are the parking/transportation options?
Located on Nan Jing Xi Lu in Jing An District, the theater is in Shanghai's established cultural corridor with metro access and surrounding commercial infrastructure. Confirm with the venue about dedicated loading docks for equipment, parking availability nearby, accessible entrances for performers and audiences, and any restrictions on street-level access.
What's included in the rental fee, and what additional costs should I anticipate?
Rental terms vary significantly—clarify whether the quote includes house staff, basic technical operation, insurance requirements, setup/breakdown time, or if these are separate line items. Ask about mandatory staffing, security deposits, and whether you can bring in your own technical crew or must use their equipment operators.
How far in advance should I book, and what are the venue's policies on rescheduling or cancellation?
Opera houses in Shanghai typically require 2-4 weeks minimum advance booking for standard productions, potentially longer during peak seasons. Request their cancellation policy, refund terms, and flexibility if you need to adjust dates—these terms directly impact your production planning timeline and financial risk.
Is the venue available for rehearsals before the performance date, and are there additional charges?
Many opera houses offer rehearsal access separately from performance rental. Ask whether they provide rehearsal slots at reduced rates, stage access for technical run-throughs, or if rehearsals require full rental fees—this affects your production budget and preparation timeline significantly.
