Planner's guide
Best For: Corporate conferences, trade shows, professional seminars, and large group meetings requiring dedicated convention space in central Durban
Estimated Budget Range: R5,000 – R25,000+ depending on room configuration, duration, and group size (contact venue for exact pricing as rates are customized)
What planners usually like:
- Established convention centre with dedicated infrastructure built specifically for events rather than adapted multipurpose spaces
- Weekday availability with consistent 8 AM – 5 PM operating hours suits standard business event scheduling
- Central Greyville location with reasonable accessibility for participants traveling within Durban
- Professional team experienced in handling logistics for larger gatherings and technical events
Things to clarify before booking:
- Request detailed breakdown of available room configurations and capacities, as total venue capacity isn't publicly listed
- Confirm what's included in base pricing (tables, chairs, AV equipment, basic lighting) versus add-on costs
- Verify weekend event availability and after-hours access possibilities, given standard weekday-only hours
- Ask about parking capacity and accessibility features, critical for larger conventions attracting multiple attendees
Common questions
Is Greyville Convention Centre suitable for events larger than 200 people?
The venue is designed as a dedicated convention centre, suggesting capacity for significant group sizes, but exact maximum capacity isn't specified. Contact them directly at +27 31 314 1982 with your expected attendance to confirm whether they can accommodate your event and what room breakout options exist.
Can we hold an event on Saturday or Sunday?
The venue operates Monday through Friday only (8 AM – 5 PM), so weekend events aren't available during standard hours. If you require a weekend date, ask about special weekend arrangements or after-hours availability when contacting them directly.
What technical capabilities does the venue have for presentations and conferences?
Specific AV and technical amenities aren't listed in their public information. Before committing, request details about projection systems, sound equipment, video conferencing capabilities, WiFi bandwidth, and whether they offer technical support staff during your event.
Are there catering facilities on-site, or do we need external caterers?
The venue details don't mention in-house catering options. Confirm whether they have preferred catering partners, if outside catering is permitted, and what restrictions exist regarding food and beverage service in different spaces.
How far in advance should we book this venue?
Convention centres in Durban typically book 3-6 months ahead for major corporate events. Contact them early to check availability for your target date, especially if you're planning a large conference or trade show that requires setup time.
What's the parking situation for delegates and exhibitors?
On-site parking capacity and parking costs aren't specified. For conventions with multiple attendees or trade show exhibitors requiring vehicle access, confirm parking availability, rates, and whether there's overflow parking nearby on Avondale Road.
